
Building on the knowledge gained during this examination, a model of interactivity is proposed that combines the perspectives of the medium and the user. The findings and observations from these examinations are then compared to determine which perspective, or combination of perspectives, is most appropriate for analyzing media interactivity. Radio is evaluated from each of the three definitional perspectives – the message, the medium, and the user - through an analysis of radio messages, medium features, and listening experience. This project examines one fundamental research question – is interactivity dependent on the technological features of a communications medium, or is interactivity a manifestation of how users perceive their communications experience? Using the existing literature as a frame work, this dissertation investigates the underpinnings of interactivity through a three-pronged examination of broadcast radio. To understand how the concept of interactivity may or may not be related to the development of new media technologies, this dissertation explores the concept through a historical examination of a medium often labeled as passive and absent of a means for interaction – broadcast radio. With such a great divide existing – between scholars who believe interactivity is dependent on technology and others who believe it is dependent on media users – academic scholarship seems far from able to agree on what constitutes interactivity.
